The Lake of the Ozarks has a rich history starting in the 1920s. In 1929, Union Electric Company out of St. Louis, MO began construction of the Bagnell Dam. This was a very interesting time in history because 4 months after construction began, the stock market crashed. The Great Depression was in full force, but the construction of this dam made way for 20,500 jobs.
On February 2, 1931, the Osage River was impounded and the Lake of the Ozarks began. It was open to vacationers May 30, 1931.
The dam itself is made of concrete and measures at 2.543 feet long. It consists of a:

- 511 ft. long power station
- 520 ft. long spillway section
- 2 non-overflow retaining sections that are adjacent to the river banks
- Highway it supports (including a 20 ft. wide roadway and a 3 ft. sidewalk)
Electricity for a large area of this state comes from the 215,000 kilowatt capacity power plant.
